Haruldane lind

[ENG below]. Mõne päeva tagune uudis läheb muutmisele - haruldase padu-roolinnu asemel oli siiski suure tõenäosusega tegemist väike-käosulasega. Neid kahte liiki ühendab lisaks välisele sarnasusele see, et mõlema esmakohtamine Eestis pärineb Vaibla Linnujaamast (padu-roolind 1990, väike-käosulane 1989). Sellest ajast alates on padu-roolind endiselt haruldane (eElurikkuse andmetel on neid Eestis vaadeldud kokku vaid paar-kolmkümmend korda), väike-käosulane aga levib järjest laiemalt ning teda kohataks Eestis regulaarselt, ehkki vaid teatud kindlates kohtades. Määrangut aitasid täpsustada Alf Tore Mjøs ja Markus Lampinen, aitäh!
Recent news about the rare Paddyfield warbler (Acrocephalus agricola) has to be corrected - after considering suggestions from friends in Internet, measurements, photos and Demongin guide we agree that the bird on the photo is most probably Booted warbler (Iduna caligata). These two species are visually very similar and sometimes hard to distinguish. One more thing applies to both of them - first ever bird of both of them in Estonia was also caught at Vaibla Ringing Station (Paddyfield warbler in 1990 and Booted warbler in 1989). Since then, paddyfield warbler has remained a rare visitor with few dozens observations while Booted warbler has become more and more abundant; still rare, but it is observed every year in particular locations all over Estonia. Thank you @Alf Tore Mjøs and Markus Lampinen for comments!

Koosöö / teamwork

[ENG below].
In a good company, everything goes fluently - fetching birds from mist nets, ringing as on conveyor belt or forest trip for picking blueberries.
Sunday, July 28 was so far the best day of this year (284 birds / 26 species), Monday came with 10° lower temperature and half as many birds (126 / 17). See tabel.vaibla.net and now twitter.com/vaibla as well.

Palavad päevad / Hot summer days

[ENG below]. Ilmad on palavad (30°), umbes sama soe on Võrtsjärve 25 cm sügavune vesi (1 km kaugusel läheb sügavamaks). Varsti saame ise ka pruuniks nende pikkade ujumisjalutuskäikude peale. Ja enamik linde, keda me siin püüame, on pruunikirjud, sekka mõni üksik värvilisem. Suvine rõngastushooaeg on kestnud kaks päeva, mõlemal oleme saanud üle 160 linnu (vt tabel.vaibla.net). Weather is very hot (30°C), almost as warm is shallow wwater in Lake Võrtsjärv. To be able to swim, one should walk ca 1 km in 10-inch water, then it gradually becomes deeper. Our summer season started now few days ago and so far results are good: both days over 160 birds. Most frequent are willow warbler (Phylloscopus trochilus; 118), sedge warbler (Acrocephalus schoenobaenus; 96) and chiffchaff (Phylloscopus collybita; 55), altogether 573 birds have been ringed this year. On Thursday kids from the Fishing camp of the Lake Museum visited us. Everybody had an opportunity to release ringed birds - some of them had never touched a bird before. Most interested kids tried to fetch birds from the net and put on the ring. Everybody had fun.
Rõngastamas: Merilin Radvilavičius, Jaak Pärtel, Kristjan, Maarja, Saskia ja Toomas Adojaan.

Enne 2019. suvise hooaja algust

Vaibla Linnujaam on suviseks rõngastushooajaks avatud!

Vaibla Ringing Station is open for the summer season! However, the birds we ringed today, were not be the first for this season. As tabel.vaibla.net shows, 237 birds have been ringed already. Common rosefinch (Carpodacus erythrinus; 28) and sedge warbler (Acrocephalus schoenobaenus; 27) are in the top. Tens of recaptures of birds, ringed in previous years were also caught. The most interesting species was the paddyfield warbler (Acrocephalus agricola), which was already caught on may 30th. It's nice that the guest season is also open - on May 25th, birders from the Swedish Marks Fågelklubb visited us. Vaibla Ringing Station invites volunteers to participate in ringing activities as well as birding enthusiasts to visit us and see birds (please contact us first via FB or e-mail vaibla@vaibla.net)!
